“I don’t want anyone to take advantage of you,” Zoe said as she stepped up into the passenger seat of her father’s pickup.

“I’d like someone to take advantage of me.”

“Ewwww. Papa.”

“What? I think the proper mourning period for Iris has passed. I’m not aiming for priesthood here.”

“Have you checked up on Bridget? Sometimes I read the news wrapped around the funny pages. Older women can take advantage of the few available men.”

“I’m not the FBI. I don’t do background checks on the older women I’m interested in dating.”

“So you’re thinking about seeing her?” Zoe wanted to feel happy for her dad. He was happy for her. But she had no ability to envision her dad with anyone else besides her mom. To her knowledge, he’d never dated anyone after their mother died.

“Not a secret, Zoe. I think that’s what I just said.”

“No, you said something about extra portions of food. Geez what’s going on here?” Zoe said peering out from the passenger seat of her father’s truck. She hadn’t been below Third since Nicki had picked her up from the airport.

“What do you mean?”

“All these motels on this street. What is this? We’re still on La Brea?”

“They’re probably SROs for the nearly homeless. I don’t think they’re highly ranked on those social media sites everyone talks about.”

“Is that a line to get on the freeway?” she asked. L.A. was so many contradictions all at once, mansions and shacks, wide boulevards clogged with traffic. It was like city planners didn’t exist on this coast.

“The meter’s probably on.”

“How are you feeling? Should we pull over? Take a walk?”

“It’s twenty, maybe thirty minutes tops, dear heart.”

“I wonder if driving in L.A. traffic ranks up there with long haul trucking and flying?” Zoe asked, listing two things Dominic had been ordered to avoid. Then, in an instant, the traffic clog eased as if by magic.

“Hardly. Look, the road’s clear. We’ll be at the edge of the continent in no time.

“Can we take a walk on the beach? I haven’t seen the ocean since I’ve been here. It’s what I miss most about being in Greece. Budapest is nice, but landlocked.”

“In those boots?”

“They’ll survive on the strand.”
